Varicose Veins

As the very name suggests it is a disorder of the veins especially of legs. It causes the legs to turn blue and swell. It leads to pain, discomfort and swelling in the legs. It is a very common condition and must be treated.

Varicose Veins

What is Varicose Veins?

  • Varicose Veins means unnaturally and permanently distended Veins. It is a disease of the circulatory system.
  • The human body has two kinds of blood vessels : Arteries & Veins. Generally speaking arteries carry oxygenated blood from heart to body parts and veins carry de-oxygenated blood towards heart.
  • Due to a long vertical gap between the heart and the legs the veins have to carry blood up a big vertical column. For making the job easier nature has broken the long vertical column into small sections by providing a number of one way valves in the veins.
  • Due to certain factors (not known very specifically) sometimes the valves become inefficient, the walls of the veins loose their elasticity and become permanently distended. This condition is known as Varicose Veins.

What causes Varicose Veins?

  • The exact cause is not known but heredity, obesity, lack of activity and long standing hours are few of the suspected causes.
  • One thing, however, is clear. Once the problem starts standing at one place without Graduated Compression Stockings for a long time certainly worsens it.
  • Surgeons, Teachers, Policemen, Counter Sales Professionals and Front Office Personnel in the hotel industry are some of the common victims

What are the symptoms?

  • Swelling in the legs especially around ankles.
  • Bluish swollen veins in legs.
  • Black marks (pigmentation) around ankle & calf.
  • Heaviness or Pain in the legs which increases on standing.
  • Pain and Stiffness in legs which increases from morning to evening.

What is the treatment?

  • A regular use of Graduated Compression Stockings throughout the day forms the first line of treatment.
  • Keeping a check on the weight, daily walking and keeping the legs slightly high at night provides relief.
  • Medicines or surgery do not generally provide much releif but only the specialist can make an assessment after examining the patient.

If left untreated?

  • Left untreated Varicose Veins keeps worsening and the pain and discomfort keeps increasing.
  • Pigmentation around the ankle and calf can make the skin color purple or black and the skin looses its texture and becomes rough.
  • Spontaneous bleeding can start in the distended veins.
  • Can lead to Non Healing Venous Ulcers
  • Can cause Orthostatic Hypotension.
