Venous Ulcers

Non Healing Ulcers near the ankle can be very disturbing. Various conditions like Varicose Veins, D.V.T., Thrombophlebitis etc. can lead to this condition.

What are Venous Ulcers?

  • Ulcer is an open sore on the skin characterized by the disintegration of the tissue and, often, the discharge of pus.
  • When these are ralated to the Veins they are called Venous Ulcers.
  • These are often present on or near the ankle and don't heal for long durations thust he term Non-Healing.

What causes Venous Ulcers?

  • This problem can be associated with many conditions e.g. Varicose Veins, D.V.T., Post Cast Oedema, Lymphoedema and various other conditions which lead to pooling of blood or lymphatic fluid.
  • Many of these conditions, if left untreated, can lead to small wounds around the ankle which do not heal. Any wound caused due to an external injury may also lead to Non Healing Ulcers if the patient is suffering from any of the above mentioned problems.

What are the symptoms?

  • Any long standing open wound on or around the ankle, which does not respond to treatment and keeps recurring can be Venous Ulcer.
  • If the patient has any associated problem like Varicose Veins, D.V.T., Post Cast Oedema or any other Venous Disorder then it is an indicative.
  • Final assessment is to be done by the surgeon.

What is the treatment?

  • Any of the above mentioned problems which can lead to Venous Ulcers should not be left untreated so that the problem can be prevented.
  • Treatment is to be done under strict medical supervision because the patient requires intensive medical treatment.
  • Application of Graduated Compression forms an integral part of the treatment and also for avoiding recurrence.

If left untreated?

  • If Venous Ulcers are left untreated they keep worsening.
  • It can cause a general worsening of the patient's life and health and cause embarrassment and can also lead to depression.
  • Recurrence is extremely common and Graduated Compression Stockings play a very vital role in preventing recurrence.
